What Is the New Medicine Service?

The New Medicine Service is a free NHS initiative designed to help you use your newly prescribed medication safely and effectively. Many patients have questions or concerns when starting a new treatment—this service gives you direct access to expert advice from your local pharmacy team. 

Who Is Eligible?

You may qualify for the New Medicine Service if you’ve been prescribed a new medication for a long-term condition such as: 

  • Asthma and COPD 
  • Diabetes (Type 2) 
  • Hypertension 
  • Hypercholesterolaemia 
  • Osteoporosis 
  • Gout 
  • Glaucoma 
  • Epilepsy 
  • Parkinson’s disease 
  • Urinary incontinence/retention 
  • Heart failure 
  • Acute coronary syndromes 
  • Atrial fibrillation 
  • Long term risks of venous thromboembolism/embolism 
  • Stroke/transient ischemic attack 
  • Coronary heart disease

What Does the Service Involve?

The New Medicine Service includes:

  • A second consultation around 1-2 weeks later to check in on how you’re getting on and address any issues or concerns.
  • Additional advice and support can be offered if needed, to help you stay on track with your treatment. 

We’re here to make your transition to new medication as smooth and stress-free as possible. These consultations can take place in person or over the phone—whichever is most convenient for you.
